CONSTRAINTS

Align work around constraints

Organize the rest of the business so it supports the area that is limiting performance. Coordinate priorities, schedules, and handoffs so the constraint receives the right work, information, and materials when needed.

When capacity is the constraint, manage how much new work enters the process to prevent excessive queues, unfinished orders, or inventory. Keep enough ready work or materials to absorb normal disruptions without overwhelming the operation.

Set customer commitments around realistic capacity, and allow supporting teams some flexibility to respond when problems arise. Judge teams by how well they contribute to overall results, including helping work move smoothly through the limiting stage.
